Mission of the Assessor's Office
The mission of the Assessor's Office is to discover, list, and value all taxable and exempt property within the Town of North Kingstown. We ensure that assessments are conducted accurately, uniformly, and in accordance with applicable laws, so that the tax roll reflects a true and accurate account of all ratable property.
The primary role of the Assessor is to ensure fair and equitable taxation by providing valuations for all real estate, motor vehicles, and tangible personal property within the town. The Assessor's Office is also responsible for administering exemptions, abatements, and preparing tax rolls as mandated by state and local statutes.
Department Functions
The Assessor's Office performs a variety of duties, including, but not limited to:
- Discovering, listing, and valuing all taxable and exempt real estate, motor vehicles, and tangible personal property.
- Preparing and certifying the annual tax roll, ensuring a true and accurate account of all ratable property.
- Coordinating all activities related to the three-year property revaluation cycles, with full revaluations every nine years and statistical revaluations in years three and six.
- Administering exemptions and abatement programs as outlined by state and local regulations.
- Maintaining property ownership records for real estate and personal property.
- Processing parcel surveys, including adjusting land lines and creating or deleting parcels as necessary.
- Receiving and addressing all appeals, coordinating appeal hearings, and serving as a liaison to the Assessment Board of Review.
