Rhode Island Building & Energy Codes – Current Standards

Current Rhode Island Building & Energy Code Standards

As of December 1, 2025 a new State Building Code has been officially adopted. The 2025 Rhode Island Building Codes are based on the 2021 International Codes (with the exception of the 2021 energy code provisions, see below) from the International Code Council (ICC), with Rhode Island specific amendments. As with any code adoption the State Law allows for a 3-month grace period which will end on March 1, 2025.

As of November 14, 2024, the State of Rhode Island has officially adopted the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) in full, with no amendments. The 3-month grace period ended on February 14, 2025, and all new construction must now comply with this updated energy code along with the 2025 Rhode Island Building Codes. In addition to the regular provisions of the 2024 IECC, the State Law also required that the "Electric-ready" provisions which were originally incorporated into the base code but had been moved to the appendices before the 2024 IECC was published, were required to be adopted no later than 1-year after the 2024 IECC was published. This 1-year period ended August 14, 2025, due to this the "Electric-ready" provisions (Appendix CH and Appendix RK) of the 2024 IECC must now be utilized.

Please note that the 2025 Rhode Island Building Codes will only be published as a complete document (with the Rhode Island Amendments incorporated into the 2021 International Codes) online on the International Code Council's Digital Codes website. These Rhode Island Digital Building Codes are available in a viewable only format without needing a subscription.
