NKIT Operations
North Kingstown Information Technology builds and manages the town's enterprise telecommunications and computing assets. This allows town government to better manage information and deliver services to residents and employees more efficiently.
The department consists of several programs under telecommunications and computing services. Some programs serve town government as a whole, while others support specific departments. It also hosts the first inter-municipal technology shared services organization in Rhode Island.
Telecommunications Technologies
Data Network Services
The department provides a seamless data network connecting all town technology assets and departments, including Internet access. Internal data networking is also provided to many departments to ensure reliable communication and connectivity.
Telephone System Services
The department operates and maintains the town's private telephone network and related systems, including voicemail and automated attendants.
Telecommunications Applications
The department administers telecommunications programs such as interactive voice response (IVR), digital recording, IP paging, and other applications that support the town’s communication functions.
Application Services
The department works with other departments to acquire, develop, and implement applications that are consistent with the town’s technology environment. This includes support for enterprise and departmental applications such as Public Safety Dispatch systems, the ERP system, video applications, web applications, online request systems, and recreation registration platforms.
Computing Services
Messaging
The department implements, operates, and maintains the town’s mission-critical email, archiving, and smartphone integration infrastructure. It also manages data storage for all departments.
Data Center & Enterprise Computing
The department operates a data center facility supporting monitoring, enterprise application support, and escalation call-out. It also manages technology for physical security, environmental controls, uninterrupted power supplies, power distribution units, and cooling. The department maintains high-performance, mission-critical 24/7 enterprise physical and virtual servers, storage, backup/disaster recovery, databases, and operating systems.
Desktop Computing
The department implements and maintains desktop and laptop computers, printers, and software for all town departments (16 agencies in 20 facilities). Activities include standards setting, policy enforcement, troubleshooting, hardware and software deployment, security management, imaging, and printer management.
Service Desk
The department serves as the primary point of contact for all IT technical support for town employees.
