Margaret Cranston Playground

About this playground
Margaret Cranston Playground is a Wickford Village history–themed play space featuring a basketball court, benches, and on-site parking. It is dedicated to the benefactor of the original playground and fields of Wickford Elementary School, and the facility is designated tobacco-free.
Location and context
The playground sits in Wickford near Boone Street by the entrance to the library. The site honors a 1940s gift of land from Margaret Cranston to give local children a place to run and play.
Design highlights
The play surface forms a large map of Wickford with color-coded land, roads, and harbor areas, paired with place-based structures such as a Wickford Light-inspired tower, a Hussey Bridge climbing feature, a trolley car, a steamboat, a playhouse echoing Smith’s Castle, and an obstacle course crossing “water” features. Educational elements include sculpted historical figures around a compass rose and raised “three sisters” gardens of corn, beans, and squash.
Features
- History-themed playground
- Basketball court
- Benches

Tobacco-free facility
Smoking, vaping, and all tobacco products are prohibited within the playground and surrounding areas.

Heritage and dedication
The playground honors Margaret Cranston, whose 1940s land donation established a community tradition of play on the former Wickford Elementary grounds. The current design integrates local landmarks and stories so children can learn about their town while they play.
Restoration of the town’s early 1800s meeting house—relocated to Boone Street—anchors the site as a small gathering hall for community groups and exhibits associated with the playground’s educational mission.
