Legacy Tree Program
In September 2024 ,the North Kingstown 350th Anniversary Committee established a program to plant a heritage Linden tree in each of the eight villages of North Kingstown in the 350th Anniversary year as a gift to future generations of town residents. Villages to receive a tree include:
- Wickford
- Hamilton
- Slocum
- Lafayette
- Quidnessett
- Saunderstown
- Davisville
- Allenton
The American Linden (American Basswood/Tilia americana) grows tall and grows quickly. It is a great pollinator and widely known as a symbol of prosperity, friendship, peace, and justice. It’s planted as a dense shade or specimen tree with heart shaped leaves and fragrant flowers. Songbirds and blue jays are attracted to its seeds and its propensity to provide shelter.
The trees have been planted in areas of public access within each village. Peter Morgan, North Kingstown Tree Warden, alongside Brynn McNamee, North Kingstown Department of Public Works, guided both the planting process and the watering of trees in the first months following installation to ensure their success. 350th Anniversary Steering Committee volunteers, supported in earnest by Historic Wickford, Inc., Plum Beach Garden Club, and other local citizens (Mike Donohue and Randy Wietman, intrinsic to this endeavor are shown in these phots during tree planting), have partnered to provide the required funds for the tree purchases to aid in beautification of our wonderful town.
A dedication ceremony for these trees will be featured in the Founder’s Day History & Tree Dedication Ceremony at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Town Hall. More details on the above and other events will be released as they become available. In the meantime, please consider this your Save The Date!
